Dietary fiber intake associated with reduced risk of esophageal cancer in Xinjiang, China.

Consistent consumption of high fiber diets may reduce the likelihood of developing esophageal cancer.

This study examined the effect of regular consumption of high fiber diets on esophageal cancer risk. Using dietary questionnaires, researchers collated and analyzed information on the dietary fiber intakes of 739 subjects living in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China. The esophageal cancer relative risk of each participant in this study was also determined.

Researchers observed that subjects with the greatest consumption rate of dietary fibers from vegetable, fruit, and cereal sources exhibited the lowest esophageal cancer risk. The findings of this study support the hypothesis that increased consumption of diets rich in fibers may confer significant protection against the development of esophageal cancer.
